Participatory Monitoring: how Places, Parks and Areas Stay – or Become – Vibrant

In the planning of new spaces, participation is a matter of course today. In existing facilities, on the other hand, the involvement of users is often lacking – as well as reliable data on current use. Our participatory monitoring closes this gap. It combines classic participation with user-centered observation – low-threshold, modular and evidence-based.

Why is participatory monitoring needed?

  • Many places are not used as planned – new groups, new demands or misuse often go unnoticed for a long time.
  • Hidden usage conflicts arise, e.g. between young people, residents or businesses.
  • Public spaces are central to quality of life – but their further development is often purely internal to the administration.

Our monitoring provides a remedy. It actively involves the real users, recognizes trends early on and gives municipalities a control instrument – for the sustainable development of their infrastructures.

Four good reasons for our offer

  1. Making usage visible: We document how facilities are actually used – analog and digital, across all target groups.
  2. Activating residents: Our low-threshold approach also reaches people who would not otherwise participate – e.g. young people or senior citizens.
  3. Avoiding conflicts: By involving residents, schools, care facilities and businesses, we recognize tensions early on.
  4. Shaping the future: Monitoring provides the basis for climate-resilient, socially sustainable transformations – and accompanies you in the long term.

Our modules – flexibly applicable

Module 1: Structured inspection

We are out and about where people really are. With direct contact in the room, we also reach hard-to-reach target groups.

Module 2: Interviews with key people

With our guided interviews, we bring to light what the stakeholders need – from the adjacent school, the nearby retirement home or the affected business.

Module 3: Card-Sorting-Workshop

Together with the project team, we develop a sustainable vision – based on proven criteria and clear priorities.

Module 4: Scale Workshop

On site and on a large scale: With the help of a projected plan on a 20 × 15 m area, we develop concrete measures in a creative setting.

Module 5: Online surveys

Users can submit their opinion directly and locally – e.g. via QR code on site.

Who is the offer suitable for?

The offer is aimed at municipalities and administrations that want to develop their facilities in a future-proof and user-centered manner. It is modular, scalable and ready for use at short notice – developed with partners such as the ZHAW and the sustainability program of Liip.

Monitoring WITH people – not ABOUT them

Participatory monitoring is more than just data collection. It is an instrument for sustainable change that takes the perspective of the users seriously – and empowers municipalities to make smart decisions.
